<description>Deleting prefetch files can help as well as this becomes corrupted over time. I often get emails about a slow shutdown, and the following two tips help with this problem

End all Terminal Services:

Shutdown problems may also be due to the terminal services in Windows XP. Some of the terminal services would include remote desktop, terminal server, fast user switching, etc. To close the terminal services, follow these steps:

(i) Click Start &gt; Run

(ii) Type services.msc /s and click OK or hit Enter.

(iii) Double-click terminal services listing.

(iv) Change “Startup type” to Disabled or Manual.

(v) Click Ok.

Decrease the Wait Time of Windows:

Windows will wait for some time for a program to completely and properly stop all by itself. This can be a reason for slow shutdown. As we are going to deal with some registry steps, I would suggest you save a restore point before attempting these steps.

(i) Click Start &gt; Run

(ii) Type regedit and click

(iii) Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl.

(iv) Double-click WaitToKillServiceTimeout

(v) Set a lower value. If the default is 2000, set it to 2.

(vi) Click OK

(vii) Reboot your system.

thanks
