If you’re looking to jailbreak iOS4.3.1 on iPod Touch, you’re in luck as the PwnageTool bundle for this has just been released. This can be used with PwnageTool 4.2 to totally customize the firmware file for jailbroken 4.3 according to your needs, to be used with the iPod touch.

This is yet another jailbreak that is tethered, and is almost similar to the ones for iPad 1G and iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3.1.  This means your iPod touch will have to use the tetheredboot utility on every reboot, to restart using the tethered-jailbroken mode. For iPod touch 3G and 4G, there is no difference in the instructions from those that are available for iPhone 4 or iPad. Here are the steps to be followed:

STEP #1: Download iPod 4.1_4.3.1_8G4.bundle file and move it to the location as per the instructions.

STEP #6: Choose the option that says “iPod touch 3G, 4G,” when there is a prompt to select your device by the PwnageTool.

How to Update iPhone 3GS to 06.15.00 Baseband for Unlock (iPhone 3Gs users only):

To be able to do this, the iPhone 3GS has to be jailbroken using the 06.15.00 baseband. In order to first update the iPhone 3GS baseband to 06.15.00 and then go ahead with jailbreaking it on iOS 4.1 / 4.2.1, follow the detailed guide here (with PwnageTool) or this instruction manual (for Redsn0w), before performing the following steps:

Step #1: Jailbreak your iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad or iPod Touch 4G/3G with Sn0wbreeze 2.4. The instructions for jailbreaking are the same as the last release of Sn0wbreeze for iOS 4.3.1.

Step #2: After jailbreaking, it is now possible to unlock your iPhone using Ultrasn0w 1.2 from Cydia, on the basebands that are supported.

• Cydia has to be started on the iPhone
• Touch the “Manage” tab at the bottom
• Touch “Sources”
• Finally, “Edit” has to be touched and then “Add.” When prompted, add the url source, http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com and “Add Source.”

With this done, Cydia will update your sources automatically in just a few automated steps. Once installation is complete, look for “ultrasn0w 1.2” in Cydia and install the application. This app unlocks your iPhone automatically and you can then use it with any carrier.

Step #3: To unlock your iPhone 4 or 3GS running iOS 4.3.1, you just have to restart your iPhone!

The iOS 4.3.1 has just been released for the iPod, iPhone and iPad.  The moment it was released, it has been jailbroken.  This was possible so quickly due to DjayB6 working on the jailbreak bundle for iOS 4.3.1, as well as with the use of Universal Ramdisk Fixer. Although jailbroken, this jailbreak is tethered. This means whenever you reboot, you will need to boot into the jailbroken state. It won’t be long before support for iPod Touch and iPhone 3GS is here.

Jailbreaking iOS 4.3.1 Using PwnageTool

For now if you wish to jailbreak iPhone 4’s iOS 4.3.1 with the help of PwnageTool 4.2 combined with tethered boot utility and Universal Ramdisk, just go through the steps given below.

The Seven Tools Needed to Jailbreak:

1. PwnageTool 4.2
2. Universal Ramdisk Fixer
3. Tetheredboot utility
4. iOS 4.3.1 firmware
5. Mac OS X
6. PwnageTool bundle for iOS 4.3.1
7. iTunes 10.2.1

Imp:

1. If your iPhone is dependent on a carrier unlock, make sure you DON’T update to iOS 4.3.1. The reason being, there is no unlock available on iOS 4.3.1 new baseband.
2. Cydia works perfectly on iOS 4.3.1.
3. Users on iPad 2 iOS 4.3 are suggested to wait for a while until we confirm, and keep a distance from iOS 4.3.1.
4. While the restore process is on, there will be no upgradation to the baseband.
5. This jailbreak is semi-tethered.
6. There is support for Hacktivation.

Here are the Steps to Modify The PwnageTool

STEP #1: Based on the version of iOS device you use, Download the PwnageTool bundle. It is a .zip folder that also contains the Universal Ramdisk Fixer. Once unzipped, you will find the appropriate .bundle file.  It will be iPhone3,1_4.3.1_8G4.bundle which is an iPhone 4 bundle.  You simply have to save it on your desktop.

STEP #2: You will have to Download (below links) the PwnageTool 4.2.  Open the Applications directory and copy the PwnageTool to that directory.  By right clicking, then click “Show Package Contents”.

STEP #3. Navigate to Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/ and paste iPhone3,1_4.3.1_8G4.bundle file in this location.

How to create a Custom Ramdisk for iOS 4.3.1

STEP #4: As you’ve seen above in #1, the Universal Ramdisk Fixer comes with the PwnageTool bundle pack.  This is an important step as the PwnageTool current version contains the broken Ramdisk.  What this Universal Ramdisk Fixer does is to patch it properly for iOS 4.3.1.

How to Create Custom iOS 4.3.1 Firmware

STEP #5: Now time to move iOS 4.3.1 firmware to your desktop, by Downloading it (below links).

STEP #6: Choose “Expert Mode” to start PwnageTool, and then choose the device you use.

STEP #7: Find the iOS 4.3.1 firmware to be used on your device.

STEP #8: Time to select “Build.”  This will begin the job of creating your custom-made 4.3.1 firmware file.

STEP #9: Once that’s done, a new custom .ipsw file will be created by PwnageTool.  You would have jailbroken your iPhone.

STEP #10: You will now use the PwnageTool to enter the DFU mode.  Here are the steps:

• The Power and Home buttons should be held for ten seconds
• After the 10 seconds are up, time to release the Power button. However, the Home button  should be held for ten more seconds
• Now your device has entered the DFU mode

Use iTunes To Restore Custom iOS 4.3.1 Firmware

STEP #11: Start iTunes. You will find an icon for iOS device in the iTunes sidebar, click on that. If you’re on Windows, now press and hold the Left “Shift” button on the keyboard.  If you’re on Mac, it’s the Left “alt” button. While holding that left button, click on “Restore” in the iTunes and then release this button. Once that’s done, you will be prompted by iTunes to choose the location of the custom 4.3.1 firmware file. Select the .ipsw file created in the procedure above, and then click “Open.”

STEP #12: You’ve done everything you need to. Time to relax while iTunes continues to go through a few automated steps.  You should not do anything while the installation is in progress, except wait and let iTunes install the new 4.3.1 firmware on the specific device you have chosen.  Once that’s done, you will have a jailbroken device on iOS 4.3.1.

How to Boot in Tethered Mode

Finally, as we mentioned, the iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak is tethered.  Since it’s not untethered, it is important to boot it only in the tethered state.  The “Tetheredboot” utility helps us with this. Here are the steps:

STEP #13: The tetheredboot.zip utility will have to be Downloaded for Mac OS X.  The zip file then needs to be extracted.

STEP #14: We will now need two files from the firmware iOS 4.3.1 .  The first one is kernelcache.release.n90 and we will also need the second file iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu. For this, you will have to copy the iOS 4.3.1 custom file that has been created in the above steps, and the extension changed to .zip from the original .ipsw.  Once changed to .zip, it needs to be extracted.  There you’ll find both the files under /Firmware/dfu/. Now move the tetheredboot utility along with these files to a new folder on the desktop, “tetheredboot”.

STEP #15: Switch off your iOS device.  Then on OS X, start Terminal. Now Run the commands given below:

sudo -s

your administrator pw has to be entered, and then run the following:

/Users/DirectoryName/Desktop/tetheredboot/tetheredboot
/Users/ DirectoryName /Desktop/tetheredboot/iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu
/Users/ DirectoryName /Desktop/tetheredboot/kernelcache.release.n90

Just change the “DirectoryName” to the directory name that is on your computer. Press Enter.

Imp Note: If, for some reason, the above does not work, instead of using ‘tetheredboot ibss kernel,’try using ‘tetheredboot -i ibss -k kernel’:

/Users/ DirectoryName /Desktop/tetheredboot/tetheredboot –i
/Users/ DirectoryName /Desktop/tetheredboot/iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu -k
/Users/ DirectoryName /Desktop/tetheredboot/kernelcache.release.n90

Note: All you have to do is drag and drop in Terminal.  First drag and drop the tetheredboot file.  Next do that with the iBSS file.  Finally, the kernelcache.release file.

Now, if everything is done correctly and it works, you will see some sort of a code that starts running on the Terminal window. During its run, you will be asked to enter the DFU mode. To enter into the DFU mode, just go through the following steps:

• For ten seconds, Hold Down the Power as well as the Home buttons
• With this, you have taken your device into the DFU mode
• Time to let your device boot.  The Terminal will display the message, “Exiting libpois0n.” Wait a while and you will find your devices, be it the iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad, are booted in a jailbroken tethered mode!

How To Create Custom iOS 4.3.1 Firmware On Windows

STEP #1: Download all the required files and tools to your desktop:

• Sn0wbreeze 2.4 for Windows.
• iTunes 10.2.1 for Windows and install it.
• iOS 4.3.1 for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

STEP #2: First Start Sn0wbreeze.  Then you will have to click on the blue arrow in order to go further.

STEP #3: Click on the “Browse” button and select the “firmware .ipsw file” that is required with your iOS device.

STEP #4: The IPSW file will then be identified by Sn0wbreeze. Once that is over, you can proceed further by clicking the next “blue” arrow.

STEP #5: Now you can start creating custom firmware by selecting the “Expert Mode” first and then the “Build IPSW” option.

Imp Note: If an unlock is needed for your iPhone, make sure you DON’T select the “Expert Mode.” Instead, you should SELECT THE “Baseband Preservation Mode” in order to proceed.

It may be easy to build custom firmware, but it does take time. You might as well enjoy a game of Pac-Man while you’re at it.

STEP #6: Once the custom firmware is created successfully, the next message from Sn0wbreeze I going to be “Done!”

STEP #7: Now he DFU mode can be entered using Sn0wbreeze. Follow these steps:

• Press down and hold both the Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds, at the same time,
• Then you can release the Power button but will have to continue holding the Home button.
• With this, the DFU mode is entered by your device.

If you’re done everything as advised and followed each step properly, you will get confirmation mesage on successfully putting the device in DFU mode

Restore iOS 4.3.1 Custom Firmware Using iTunes

STEP #8: First, start iTunes. Then click on the iOS device symbol in iTunes. Now press down and hold the Left “Shift” button on the keyboard.  Then click on “Restore” button (DO NOT click on “Update” or “Check for Update”) in iTunes and then release the button.

With this, iTunes will give you the option to choose the location where you want the custom firmware 4.3.1 file to be. Select the custom .ipsw file created by you and “Open” it by clicking on it.

STEP #9: Finally, just sit back and have fun as iTunes handles everything else. Now all you have to do is wait while a few automated steps are taken care of. Be patient and don’t press on anything unnecessarily. Let the iTunes do its job of installing the new firmware 4.3.1 on your iOS device. At this point, your iOS device will show a progress bar, which is an indication that the installation is in progress. Once the installation is complete, you have successfully jailbroken the iOS device on iOS 4.3.1.

How to Boot in Tethered Mode

Finally, it is important to understand that “untethered jailbreak” for iOS 4.3.1 does not exist as of now. It will have to be booted into a jailbroken mode (tethered). This can be done by using the “iBooty” utility on Windows.  Here are the steps:

STEP #10: Run iBooty for Windows and using the dropdown menu, choose the iOS device.

Imp Note: Once Sn0wbreeze is run on Windows, iBooty will then be be extracted to the desktop (iBooty-for-4.3.1).

STEP #11: Click the “Start” button and go according to the instructions given on the screen, to get your device into the DFU mode:

• Press and Hold the Power and Home buttons down for 10 seconds
• Then you may release the Power button but you will have to continue to hold the Home button for 10 more seconds
• Your device now entered the DFU mode

STEP #12: Once in the DFU mode, iBooty will take care of the rest.  After a little while, your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad will boot in a jailbroken mode (tethered) on the newest version of iOS 4.3.1!
